As Venice is such a unique city, it is important to use care and good sense when approaching the city and during your stay. A few suggestions to make your stay more pleasant:
- Venice is considered to be an open-air museum. Do not deface walls or monuments in any way, do not litter, do not sit or lie down on public ground to consume food or drinks. Food and drink consumption should be done only in specifically designated places such as the former Royal Gardens (near San Marco), the Papadopoli Gardens (near Piazzale Roma), or the Gardens of Castello in Via Garibaldi.
- Avoid inappropriate clothing and/or beach attire. Do not dip your feet in to the canals, in the basin of San Marco or in any waters in the urban area .
- Remember that the traffic in Venice is all pedestrian. Walk on the right side and avoid stopping along the narrow streets so as to not slow others down or create people jams. Be considerate that many pedestrians are locals who need to get to work .
- Do not buy falsified merchandise or products sold by illegal vendors. New laws have been passed that heavily penalize those surprised in the act of buying knockoff merchandise or found with it in their possession.
- Keep a careful watch over your personal belongings, making sure that documents and money are in a safe place, out of reach from pickpockets. The city is safe at night, but given the high influx of people it is best to be cautious .
- Your behavior and sensitivity to these issues can do much to preserve the uniqueness of Venice . Just a few small details can make a big difference. Above all it is important to safeguard the city's public and private property.
